ROCK SPRINGS – Officer Matt Weber and the Sweetwater County Inmate Outside Work Crew have been selected as the Rock Springs Main Street/URA December Volunteer of the Month. The Organization Committee of the Rock Springs Main/URA announced the decision last week.RS Airport

The Sweetwater County Inmate outside Work Crew Program was established roughly seven years ago by Sheriff Richard Haskell to help in the community, according to a release from URA. The crew consists of inmates from the county jail who are sentenced to misdemeanors. There is one worker who goes to the County Shop every day to assist with the maintenance of the county vehicles, cleaning the shop and any other task that need done on a daily basis. The rest of the crew helps in the community.

Some of the tasks performed are cleaning the county roads, picking up various dump sites around the county, cleaning road-ways, and washing cars for the county.  In the winter, they clear driveways of snow in Rock Springs and Green River for the elderly. The inmate workers lend assistance as well to area non-profits.

Over the years, they have helped the Rock Springs Main Street/ URA office with several moving projects as well as set up the Pumpkin Patch.  They’ve also helped with Christmas decorations, general clean-up and painting.

The Rock Springs Main Street/URA is charged with the redevelopment of Downtown Rock Springs.  As part of their mission, there are four standing committees – Economic Restructuring, Organization, Promotions and Design.  The Organization Committee plays a key role in keeping the Board, Committees, staff and programs of work in good shape by attracting people and funds for the organization.
