***UPDATE*** Due to a power outage caused by a fire in WWCC’s basement, the games have been rescheduled for Thursday, January 14 at WWCC. The women will play at 3 p.m., and the men will play at 5 p.m.
ROCK SPRINGS – Western Wyoming College Mustang Men’s Basketball will open home Region IX North play against Casper College on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in Rushmore Gymnasium, in a contest that should determine sole ownership of first place, at least for now.
The Mustangs come into this week’s game with a 14-3 overall record and plenty of momentum, having won three straight, including two road games last weekend versus Miles City and Little Big Horn. Casper, at 12-4, also comes into Rushmore Gymnasium with a three-game win streak.
“Needless to say, it’s a big game for both teams,” Mustang coach Ryan Orton said Tuesday in a press release from WWCC. “Both squads are solid ball clubs and it should be a pretty high-level game.”
The women’s game between the two schools will take place just before the men’s game and is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The Mustang women head into this week’s action with a 1-1 North record and 9-5 overall.
“They’re good,” Mustang coach Garett Sherman said of the Thunderbirds. “They’re ranked No. 14 in the nation, and they’re very deserving of it. They have players at every position and a lot of size. We’re going to have to play really well to stay in the game with them.”
The Mustang men and women will be in action again on Saturday, Jan. 16, when Gillette College comes to Rock Springs. The women are scheduled to tip at 3 p.m. and the men at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
