A 17-year-old girl from Newcastle died in a car accident on Tuesday.
According to a release from Wyoming Highway Patrol, 17-year-old Laura Chord died in a crash on U.S. Highway 16 approximately six miles east of Newcastle.
Chord was driving a 1993 Honda Accord eastbound at about 6:45 p.m. when the vehicle drifted into oncoming traffic. Jimmie Josephson, a 34-year-old woman from Newcastle, was driving a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee westbound when Chord’s vehicle drifted into the lane.
Josephson swerved to the north in an attempt to avoid a collision, but was unable to prevent the crash from happening.
Chord was wearing her seat belt but still sustained fatal injuries on scene.
Josephson and three passengers from her Jeep were transported to Weston County Health Services in Newcastle by ground ambulance. All occupants in the jeep were properly retrained, according to WHP.
Fatigued driving is being investigated in this crash.
This marked the 15th highway death in Wyoming in 2016 compared to 42 at the same time period in 2015.
