Cowgirl Golf Team Begins 2015-16 Season

LARAMIE, Wyo. (Sept. 9, 2015) — The University of Wyoming Cowgirl golf team will travel to Fort Collins, Colo., to compete in the annual Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic, Sept. 14-15. The tournament will be hosted by Colorado State at Ptarmigan Country Club. It will mark the 13th-straight season the Cowgirls will compete in the annual tournament and the 11th time it will open the fall portion of UW’s schedule.

UW returns all but one senior from a year ago and will welcome three newcomers. Of those who are returning, Mackenzie Barrie had the second-best finish tying for 36th at the MW Championships to guide the Cowgirls. Gabrielle Gibson finished 42nd, as Taylor Dorans and Emily Woodard finished close behind in 43rd and 44th, respectively. Rounding out the returners for Wyoming is senior Kathleen Kershisnik, sophomores Klara Castillo and Sarah Hankins, as well as redshirt freshman Amanda Hinchey. Sophomore transfer Michelle Romano joins the Cowgirls after transferring from UCCS, as Kaylee and Megan Knadler prepped at Pinnacle high school in Phoenix, Ariz.

Wyoming has five Cowgirls that have competed at Ptarmigan Country Club. Kathleen Kershisnik was Wyoming’s top finisher in Fort Collins a year ago. She recorded a 234 (+18), while Woodard shot 236 (+20), Dorans hit a 241 (+25), Barrie finished with 243 (+27) and Gibson recorded a three-round scorecard of 249 (+33).

The Cowgirls’ fall schedule features four events. UW will host the fifth annual Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate on Sept. 26-27 at the Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif. Wyoming will also participate in the Denver Ron Moore Intercollegiate on Oct., 9-11 and to complete the fall season UW will travel to Honolulu, Hawai’i for the Rainbow Wahine Invitational.

The Cowgirls were able to enjoy a summer full of competition, as a majority of the team members participated in a number of events. Castillo was the SCAGA Match Play Champion at the Paa-Ko Ridge Golf Course. Barrie brought home two victories over the summer as she won the Second Annual BC Cup Golf Championship at GreenAcres Golf Course in Richmond, BC and the MJT Ford Series at Predator Ridge Golf Resort in Vernon, BC.

Gibson came away victorious at the Hidden Valley College Players Tournament and also finished fourth at the Women’s LA City Golf Championship. Taylor Dorans won the Presidents’ Flight Final of the CWGA Match Play Championship at Raccoon Creek Golf Course in Littleton, Colo. She also tied-fifth in the Colorado Women’s Strokeplay Championship, as teammates Sarah Hankins tied-ninth and Kershisnik tied-11th. Kershisnik also participated in the US Amateur Qualifier and finished tied-17th.

Freshman Kaylee Knadler tied for fifth in the Thunderbird Junior Classic, while her sister and fellow freshman, Megan took third place in the Arizona State Junior Championship and second in the Milt Coggins Jr. Championship at the Encanto Golf Course. Rounding out the summer competition for the Cowgirls was Woodard, who won the Wyoming Women’s State Amateur Championship before tying ninth in the US Amateur Qualifier.
